| Did you know that gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds has coordinated his campaign with the most extreme national pro-abortion organizations as they attack pro-life Bob McDonnell, whom they’ve dubbed “Backwards Bob,” for his efforts to protect unborn babies and their mothers from abortion? Deeds repeatedly says, “If Bob McDonnell becomes governor… [he’ll push for] his extreme social agenda that will take Virginia backwards.” Ironically, it is Deeds whose position is outmoded. As the Fredericksburg Freelance Star pointed out in an August 20, 2009, editorial: “Most of America has grown up, and wised up, about the unborn, now silhouetted in ultrasound images and healed by in-vitro surgery. Even back in bell-bottomed America there was something unscientific and crass about couching abortion—the solving of a problem with terminal violence—exclusively in 'women’s rights' terms, and that is more true today as science and technology, as much as religious dogma, have established fetal humanity.” Yet, as technology and medicine have advanced leaps and bounds in the last two decades, Deeds’ position on abortion has regressed. As a member of the House of Delegates, Deeds had a mixed record, generally voting to weaken but later ultimately to pass common sense laws, like requiring parental notification prior to performance of an abortion on a minor age daughter, and a ban on partial-birth abortion. As a state senator, Deeds veered left by opposing a parental consent law and the recently upheld ban on partial-birth infanticide. Deeds now lines up with a radical minority of pro-abortion extremists. Meanwhile, the legislation Bob McDonnell sponsored as a delegate and later defended as our attorney general is supported by large majorities of Virginians. McDonnell’s leadership in banning partial-birth abortion and assisted suicide, and in enacting parental notification and informed consent has established Virginia as one of the most protective states for the vulnerable unborn child, disabled and elderly. Isn’t unrestricted abortion the ultimate effort by pro-abortion fanatics to turn back the clock? They would love to go back to the days before the Casey decision allowed states to enact some protective legislation for unborn babies and their mothers. Deeds’ efforts to ingratiate himself with pro-abortion leaders have succeeded. In endorsing Deeds, National Abortion Rights Action League’s Virginia affiliate said, “Virginians cannot afford to have an elected leader confuse political ideology with medical need.” NARAL is blind to its own irony. After all, it is Deeds who opposed the Woman’s Right to Know Law which guarantees that women undergoing an abortion have a chance to receive factual medical information about the abortion procedure, as well as much needed information about other recourses available to them if they have their child. It is also Deeds who opposed the Partial-Birth Infanticide law, which bans a procedure that is never medically indicated and poses great risk to the mother’s physical and mental health. Now, the national NARAL office has decided to make the Virginia governor’s race their top priority as well. They have just launched a national $45,000 fundraising campaign to contact their nearly 78,000 pro-abortion households in Virginia. Two-thirds of Americans agree with you and me about these common-sense pro-life measures that Bob McDonnell has spent his career championing. Fortunately, our list of identified supporters is larger than NARAL’s. VSHL PAC is a bare-bones operation that relies heavily on volunteer efforts and gets maximum mileage from every dollar generously donated. Nevertheless, with pro-life supporters to reach in every nook and cranny of the state, VSHL PAC must raise sufficient funds to get the truth out about pro-life Bob McDonnell’s leadership and pro-abortion Creigh Deeds’ backward record in order to assure that pro-lifers vote on November 3rd. VSHL is the only single-issue, pro-life organization in the state that has a political action committee to do this work. Your contribution will be a major factor in the measure of success achieved in this vital election for Virginia’s next governor as well as the pro-life ticket of Bill Bolling, Ken Cuccinelli, and dozens upon dozens of strong pro-life candidates running for the House of Delegates.
